City gives green light to start building new high school

The Upper Grand District School Board received a building permit and site plan approval for the new high school from the City of Guelph

South Guelph’s new high school is set to break ground this fall after receiving the building permit and site plan approval from the City of Guelph.

The yet-to-be-named school will be situated on the northwest corner of Arkell Road and Victoria Road. It will accommodate 900 students.

This high school was initially approved in January 2018 by the province.

“I am excited that we have reached this milestone and we are looking forward to breaking ground in the fall,” said Ralf Mesenbrink, Upper Grand District School Board chair, in a press release.

The target opening for the school is the 2026/2027 school year. The initial cost of the school was $25.5 million with a September 2022 opening date.

Back in June UGDSB announced it received an additional $35,621,723 of funding for the high school. The total cost, including the additional funding is $61.1 million for the school.

A boundary review for the new high school will start soon and will begin with communication being sent to the school communities. A timeline for the boundary review process will be shared online.

“This is great news for Guelph secondary school families. We are thrilled we are able to move forward with next steps immediately,” said Peter Sovran, UGDSB director of education, in a press relase
