On Monday June 6, 2016, the Guelph Chamber of Commerce hosted the Honorable Carlos Cascos, Secretary of State, State of Texas and Ms. Sara Wilshaw, Consul General of Canada, Dallas, Texas for a roundtable discussion with leading businesses and institutions in Guelph.

"I am pleased to be here with Texas Secretary of State, Carlos Cascos, and his team to showcase the extraordinary companies that exist in southwestern Ontario.‎ The many innovative businesses here can help add to the strong trade relationship between Canada and Texas‎," says Sara Wilshaw, Consul General of Canada in Dallas, Texas.

Canada is Texas’ 2nd largest trade partner (after Mexico), with two way goods trade totalling $41.3 billion (USD), plus $4.5 billion in services exports to Canada.

The top goods traded between Texas and Canada include, machinery and tools, electronics, aircraft, motor vehicles & parts. Texas also serves as a gateway to the Mexican market for Canadian goods and services. Texas has led the nation in exports for over a decade, exporting more than New York and California combined.

“It’s an honor to be in the Royal City to learn about the local economy and ways the community and Texas can work together for mutual prosperity,” says the Honorable Carlos Cascos, Secretary of State, State of Texas.

“Given Guelph’s place as a leader in agri-business, manufacturing, energy and new technology development, it is important that the Guelph Chamber delivers on its commitment to provide further cross-border & global opportunities in these sectors for our local business community,” says Kithio Mwanzia, President & CEO of the Guelph Chamber of Commerce.

“Convening organizations that are actively involved and are eager to go global – and connecting them with key opportunities to achieve this goal, is a means of accelerating local capacity and helping those organizations reach the next level.”

Texas is the second largest state in the United States, both in terms of land size and population.  The state’s population grew from 21 million to 25 million between 2000 and 2010, and growth continues: today 26.9 million people call Texas home.

The Dallas/Ft. Worth region and the Houston region are the United States’ 4th and 5th largest metropolitan regions.

“The Chamber has been actively involved in programs and activities that better connect Guelph businesses with global opportunities. Through the Guelph Economic Leadership Forum, the Chamber has focused on connecting businesses in a variety of sectors – including agri-food, manufacturing, infrastructure and energy – to expanding market opportunities around the world,” concludes Mwanzia.
