It could have been a lot worse.
The (hopefully) last blast of winter weather that hit the area late Wednesday and into Thursday wasn't as severe as many anticipated.
The mix of freezing rain, ice pellets and sleet did make for some poor driving conditions and a layer of ice, particularly early in the morning. But Guelph Police reported only a handful of minor accidents and no serious ones with fewer than they might have expected given the road conditions.
"It seems like everyone was driving with the proper due diligence," Const. Mike Gatto of the Guelph Police said.
The inclement weather did make for an extra-long weekend for most students in Guelph, as both the Catholic and Upper Grand District School boards closed all its schools, giving students a five-day Easter weekend, with no school on Monday either.
Conestoga College also closed its Guelph campus on Thursday, but the University of Guelph remained open.
Everything is covered in ice yet classes aren't cancelled, good going Guelph 👌🏼

There were no power outages reported in Guelph but 1,830 customers in Rockwood and Eramosa Township remained without power through most of Thursday morning due to an issue with Hydro 1 supply, but it was fully restored just before noon.

Temperatures hovered around -2 C throughout the morning but were expected to rise to plus-3 C by mid-afternoon, bringing more rain. Highs for the Easter weekend range from 5 C to 10 C on Sunday, with more rain expected Sunday.
