Fencing has gone up around an area of Eastview Community Park, where efforts to construct the first phase of a bike park is expected to get underway soon.

Work on the city’s first official bike track is set to begin soon.

Site preparations for the project’s initial phase at Eastview Community Park are underway and construction is expected to start within the next week.

This first part of the bike park is to feature an asphalt pump track – a series of rollers and bank turns designed not to require pedalling or pushing and is open to all types of bicycles – beside the park’s fenced-in mini soccer fields along the driveway off Watson Parkway North.

That work is expected to be completed by next summer, city park planner Christina Vannelli stated in an email to GuelphToday.

City officials recently awarded the project to Guelph-based 39 Seven Inc. at the tendered price of $698,291.

The project’s overall concept and location were endorsed by council in 2017, though it has been the topic of community discussions for many years.

Future expansion plans call for the creation of a skills and training track, featuring jump lines and a technical trail. However, there’s no firm timeline for that work at this point.
