NEWS RELEASE
ART NOT SHAME
***************************
Art Not Shame is excited to offer ASL 101, an eight-week online course introducing American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture to 2SLGBTQIA+ learners and their allies. The course will run online on Fridays from March 28 to May 16, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., providing an immersive and community-focused learning experience.

Queer ASL 101 is designed for participants with little to no experience with ASL. The curriculum includes learning the ASL alphabet, fingerspelling, introductions, discussing likes and dislikes, language upbringing, identities, and where we live. The final class will culminate in students sharing a personal autobiography in ASL. The course follows a voice-off policy, creating an immersive signing environment that respects Deaf cultural spaces and enhances the learning experience. A flipped classroom format is used, meaning students engage with course materials before, during, and after each class for a deeper learning experience.

We are committed to maintaining equitable access to our programs. While we strive to make all of our programs free of charge, we do not always have the resources to do so. When a program is offered for a fee, those who are able to pay are encouraged to do so, while those who cannot will receive the necessary support. Our goal is to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate, regardless of their financial circumstances, while maintaining our commitment to fair wages for artists. This course is offered on a sliding scale of $100–$200. If cost is a barrier, please email [email protected] for support.

Join us in fostering connection, accessibility, and inclusion through ASL!
