A longstanding temperature record in Guelph – dating back to before the first successful airplane flight – could be on the verge of being broken.
Environment Canada said the mercury rose to 13.5 C at 2 p.m. Friday. The previous record for Feb. 9 in Guelph was 13.9 C, set in 1900.
“I’d say there’s a pretty good chance we might hit it,” said Peter Kimbrell, the warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada.
“The winds are still gusting, and so it’s probably attracting some warm air.”
The warmer temps won’t last through the weekend, though.
Kimbrell said it’ll be cooler Saturday, with an anticipated high of 10 C, which he considers a bit ambitious. Sunday will see a high of 1 C, and a chance of flurries.
The near freezing temperatures are expected to continue into next week.
“Cold is on its way,” Kimbrell said. “Winter is not over.”
