The much-used 100 steps pedestrian walkway that connects Elizabeth Street to Grove and Metcalfe streets on the hill is officially open for use.
The walkway, a popular cut-through for people in the Ward neighbourhood to access schools to the north, had been closed for over seven months.
A new steel and wooden bridge has been installed.
Although officially reopened Friday, people had been using it for the past couple of weeks, going around barriers the city had installed.
Kealy Dedman, the city's General Manager of Engineering/Capital Infrastructure, said the city was notified at the end of last week.
"Good news. We received word from the railway on Friday that it could be opened up and our public works staff removed the barriers over the weekend," Dedman said via email.
The walkway was closed on Aug. 1 of last year after a routine inspection identified corrosion issues with the bridge that crosses the rail tracks.
While the city owns and maintains the steps, the bridge is owned by the rail companies that use the corridor.
