INSIDE THE VILLAGE: Why nurses 'dread' going to work at Ontario hospitals

This week on the podcast: A new study reveals just how brutal it is to be a hospital worker in Ontario right now — and whether anything can be done to help ease a staffing crisis that keeps getting worse

Welcome back to Inside the Village, a one-of-a-kind podcast where all news is local — and no topic is off-limits.

On this week's episode: More proof of the staffing crisis inside Ontario hospitals.

In previous shows, we've tackled the many problems plaguing emergency rooms across the province, including why some ERs in rural communities have been forced to temporarily shut down.

Now a new study — called Running On Empty — sheds more light on just how bad the crisis has become. Based on 26 interviews with CUPE hospital workers in Ontario, including nurses, personal support workers and clerical staff, the study paints a dire picture of what it's like to work in those health-care professions right now.

Joining us to talk about the study is co-author James Brophy, a researcher at the University of Windsor. If you care about our public health care system, this is a must-watch interview.

Also on the podcast this week: More news about SPACES, and a big announcement about our latest local news site. Hint: it's Toronto!

Hosted by Scott Sexsmith and Michael Friscolanti, the Editor-in-Chief of Village Media, Inside the Village is a news and current affairs podcast that provides a weekly window into some of the best local journalism from across our chain of Ontario newsrooms. Produced by Derek Turner, the program also explores bigger-picture issues that impact people across the province.

Every episode can be found HERE. If you prefer the audio version, it is available wherever you find your favourite podcasts.
