INSIDE THE VILLAGE: Cigarettes that speak the truth, one butt at a time

This week on the podcast: New rules from Health Canada will force cigarette makers to label each and every smoke with a blunt warning — including 'Poison in every puff' and 'Cigarettes cause impotence'

Welcome back to Inside the Village, a one-of-a-kind podcast where all news is local — and no topic is off-limits.

On this week's episode: Cigarettes that speak the truth.

In an effort help even more people quit smoking, Health Canada is ushering in new rules this summer that will force cigarette makers to label each and every butt with a blunt warning.

"Poison in every puff."

"Tobacco smoke harms children."

"Cigarettes cause impotence."

First announced last year, the move will make Canada the first-ever country to require warning labels not just on tobacco packaging, but on individual cigarettes.

Will it work? Will it inspire more people to quit? We ask Rob Cunningham, a lawyer and senior policy analyst for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Also on the podcast: The latest on the doctor shortage plaguing northern Ontario, which we told you about last week.

Hosted by Scott Sexsmith and Michael Friscolanti, the Editor-in-Chief of Village Media, Inside the Village is a news and current affairs podcast that provides a weekly window into some of the best local journalism from across our chain of Ontario newsrooms. Produced by Derek Turner, the program also explores bigger-picture issues that impact people across the province.
