Cyndy McLean from Guelph has raised $56,000 so far for the purchase of new chemotherapy chairs for Grand River Regional Cancer Centre (GRRCC), the hospital where she once received treatment.

Last month, after much preparation and training, McLean set off to handcycle through 10 southern Ontario communities for her fundraiser, '10x21: Cycling 4 Chemo Chairs,' an initiative to raise funds to support the purchase of new chemotherapy chairs for GRRCC in Kitchener, which provides services to Guelph.

"At this moment, we are closing in on eight new chemo chairs for Grand River Regional Cancer Centre. We are going to leave the campaign open until Oct. 21st for those that still wish to donate and support this campaign," McLean said.

A passionate advocate for cancer patients and spinal cord injury awareness, McLean initiated the 10 x 21: Cycling 4 Chemo Chairs campaign to give back to the centre that supported her through her own cancer journey.

Marking the five-year anniversary of her treatment, she hopes to give back by raising funds to help GRRCC.

“I want to honour everyone who cared for me and help support other people facing cancer,” McLean said.

“And maybe offer some inspiration and hope along the way.”

The 10th and final ride will be held on Monday and will start at GRRCC with a ride kickoff/fundraiser celebration at noon in the courtyard between the cancer centre and Grand River Hospital at 835 King St W.

"This ride is a little different because it is a solo journey back to Guelph. I will be doing a combination of riding and some driving in my support vehicle to accomplish the 21km and get me back to my home in Guelph," McLean said.

"This is quite a symbolic route!"
