Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: A Martial Art for Everyone at Royal City BJJ

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has long been celebrated for its effectiveness, blending physicality with strategic problem-solving. At Royal City Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Guelph, the philosophy is simple: BJJ is for everyone. This is beautifully demonstrated by the diverse range of members, each bringing unique backgrounds
and inspiring stories to the mats.

Hendrik Van der Merwe is one of these exceptional individuals. Born without the use of his legs, Hendrik is a para-athlete who has competed in the Paralympics. Not only does he excel in swimming—he also teaches it—but his passion for challenging limits brought him to BJJ. Despite his paraplegia, Hendrik uses adaptive techniques to neutralize opponents, showcasing that BJJ is not just about physical power but leverage, strategy, and heart. His journey is an inspiration to everyone who trains with him, proving that limitations are only in the mind.

Aubrey Delong, another standout member, regularly trains with men often twice her size. As a woman in a predominantly male sport, Aubrey faces the challenge of size and strength differences every time she steps on the mat. Yet, she perseveres, continually proving her skill and tenacity. Recognizing that not all women are comfortable jumping into a co-ed class, Aubrey leads an all-female class at the club. This environment offers women the opportunity to start their BJJ journey in a more comfortable setting, building their confidence and skills before stepping into mixed training sessions.

Then there’s Pasquale Galluzzo, who proves that it’s never too late to try something new. Pasquale just turned 66 years old and recently decided to take up BJJ for the first time. In a sport where flexibility and strength are often perceived as essential, Pasquale’s determination and willingness to challenge himself are a reminder that BJJ is for all ages.

On the other hand, Jim Stevenson started his BJJ journey at the age of 48. Now, at 66, he’s proudly earned his black belt after nearly two decades of dedication. Jim’s story demonstrates that the path to mastery is open to anyone with the perseverance and drive to keep showing up, regardless of when they start.

Isaac Cook, a 30-year-old natural athlete, brings incredible energy to the mats. His physical prowess and enthusiasm for the sport are balanced by the humility and camaraderie that are cornerstones of BJJ. Isaac is a reminder that even those who come in with natural athletic abilities continue to grow and learn in an environment where everyone helps each other.

At Royal City Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the sense of community is palpable. All ages, abilities, and backgrounds come together, each person helping the next to improve. Whether you're a seasoned athlete, a beginner, or someone simply looking for a way to challenge yourself both physically and mentally, BJJ offers something for everyone. The environment is friendly, the training is exciting, and the bonds formed on the mats often turn into lifelong friendships.

If you’re looking for a new way to challenge yourself, Royal City Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu might just be the place
for you. Here, it’s more than a martial art—it’s a family.
