Guelph Outdoor School: Cultivating Curiosity and Connection Through Nature

About Us

Founded in 2012, Guelph Outdoor School (GOS) was established to address the increasing need for dynamic, holistic educational experiences. Our nature immersion programs offer a refreshing alternative to traditional classroom settings, providing a blend of learning and development that promotes overall health and well-being. Recognized for their effectiveness, our programs engage children in a one-day-a-week format during school hours, immersing them in hands-on, nature-based learning.

Our Approach

At GOS, we leverage the natural environment to spark curiosity, focus, and a sense of wonder. Our approach centers around mentorship, small class sizes (5:1 ratios), and a culture of inquiry. Our dedicated instructors role-model, support, and celebrate each child's journey, fostering a culture where questions are as valuable as answers. Through this immersive experience, children develop essential life skills such as self-reliance, cooperation, and adaptability.

Our Setting

Located on 13 wooded acres of cedar grove along the Eramosa River, our Stone Rd site offers a vibrant, living classroom. Surrounded by public wild spaces, including the Guelph hiking trail and arboretum, our outdoor spaces are home to a diverse range of wildlife. Our facilities include serviced outdoor washrooms and a heated canvas tent for cooler days. We approach our stewardship with respect and accountability, ensuring that our presence contributes positively to the land and future generations.

A Typical Day

  • Welcome: Begin with a circle around the fire, where we engage in introductions, gratitude, music, and storytelling.
  • Activate: Energize with thrilling and playful warm-up games to stimulate bodies and minds.
  • Focus: Dive into self-sufficiency and cooperative challenges such as mapping, tracking, and fire making.
  • Time for Timelessness: Enjoy rest, laughter, reflection, and exploration.
  • Harvest: Reflect on the day's events, discuss what stood out, and consolidate learning through instructor-led discussions.
  • Integrate: Connect daily lessons to broader themes and personal growth.

A Typical Year

Our year is defined by core routines that evolve with the seasons: tracking, fire making, plant identification, carving, archery, and storytelling. As we observe and interact with nature, children develop a deeper understanding of their environment, gaining skills that extend beyond the classroom. This continuous cycle of learning and adapting builds resilience and a profound sense of connection.

The Benefits

Research consistently supports the numerous benefits of nature immersion. Children participating in GOS programs demonstrate improved emotional balance, enhanced focus, and increased competence. They develop a greater appreciation for healthy living, experience better sleep, and exhibit a vibrant enthusiasm for learning. Our programs are designed to nurture well-rounded individuals who are self-sufficient, empathetic, and engaged with the world around them.
