The University of Guelph isn’t playing around when it comes to breaking COVID protocols.
Since the outbreak was declared in the East Village Townhouses on Jan. 21, the university issued a total of 73 tickets.
Between Jan. 21 and Jan. 25, Campus Community Police issued 41 provincial fines of $120 to students, totaling $5,040.
After that, they increased their fines and added tougher penalties, like potential eviction from residence.
Since Jan. 25, the university issued 32 provincial fines of $880 for breaking COVID-19 safety measures totaling $28,160.
Deirdre Healey, communications officer at the U of G said out of the 32 fines of $880, 12 were issued in connection to the gatherings on Jan. 15 and Jan. 16.
In total, the university issued fines totaling $33,200.
Breaking COVID-19 safety measures includes anything from failure to wear a mask, holding social gatherings, and failing to social distance. These fines all fall under the Reopening Ontario Act.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the university reported 67 positive COVID cases from the residence outbreak. Of those cases, 62 have been resolved.
Students currently isolating in relation to the COVID-19 outbreak must meet the criteria for completing isolation provided by Student Wellness and also inform student housing before they end their isolation.
