NEWS RELEASE
WPG PUBLIC HEALTH
*************************
On Thursday, February 11, WDG Public Health announced that a previously-resolved case of COVID-19 in Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph had been identified as a case of the COVID-19 UK variant after genetic sequencing by Public Health Ontario. The individual received a positive test for COVID-19 on January 13 and the case was considered resolved on January 21 after the individual completed their self-isolation.
As a result of this new information from PHO, WDG Public Health is re-examining all elements of this case – including high-risk contacts – to determine whether any further cases or additional risk to the public exists. Based on the investigation, which is ongoing, we can share the following:
- There are five related resolved cases which are either confirmed or suspected variant cases.
- These individuals traveled outside of Canada together. The initial case is resident of WDG, who contracted the virus and completed their self-isolation outside of Canada.
- From this initial case, the four additional individuals tested positive (or were suspected positives) and completed their self-isolation upon their return to Canada – three cases in WDG (one of which is the case sequenced by PHO) and one in Toronto.
- The investigation is ongoing but, no immediate action from the public is required at this time.
