The Guelph Grotto continues to reach new peaks with a growing group of climbers and the Guelph community at large.
On Nov 16, the climbing gym will host its 30th anniversary to celebrate three decades of climbing, growth and the supportive community that has helped to make it all possible.
"What makes the Guelph Grotto so special, is that it has been a place that so many people have called home. Many have said it their second or third home over the duration of the organization's life span," said grotto general manager, Julia Pilliar.
"And it truly is, thanks to the Perrozo family, who have dedicated themselves to building the original space through multiple expansions into what it is today. It really has become a premier climbing gym and a destination for many people."
And beyond that, Pilliar said The Guelph Grotto's values have stayed the same throughout the years.
"It really is about community," she said. "And inclusion."
At the grotto, anyone can climb. The family-run, community-oriented gym strives to create an accessible and inclusive space where everyone can get on the wall.
"Everyone can climb so everyone is welcome. And that truly is what every single staff member lives and breathes and what they want to promote when they are in this space and sharing it," Pilliar said.
The grotto welcomes current and future climbers, regardless of experience or ability. The gym offers top rope, bouldering and lead climbing with a variety of climbing options and packages for climbers of all ages, experience levels, and expertise.
A lot has changed since the gym was first opened by Dave Perozzo in 1994.
Expanding over the years, the grotto offers accessible ways to experience the unique challenge of climbing not just indoors, but also outdoors for climbers curious to experience what it's like to climb on real rock.
Whether a seasoned veteran or brand new to climbing, The Guelph Grotto invites everyone to be part of the milestone event on Saturday.
People can purchase day passes to the 30th anniversary celebration which will include a variety of activities such as in-and-out access to the event, rock climbing opportunities, a silks showcase, a vendor market and an artist showcase.
Day pass proceeds will go directly to the Guelph Food Bank.

There will be two youth program time blocks during the anniversary celebration that will feature fun, engaging, and facilitated activities for kids. Led by youth program staff, sessions will offer young climbers a chance to explore the wall and develop their skills.
The community bouldering competition is open to climbers of all levels. Participants can test their skills on a variety of boulder problems in a fun and supportive atmosphere.
"People can preregister for activities including youth programs for two different time slots, one in the morning, and one in the afternoon. Also, our community boulder scramble is open to everybody. People can preregister, or they can drop in on the day," Pilliar said.
The Guelph Grotto will also host a 'meet and greet' with the Perrozo family at Royal City Brewing Co. which will offer an opportunity for the community to share stories, make new friends, and reflect on the memories created over the past 30 years.
"We always look to see how we can give back to the community. With all proceeds from the event going to the Guelph Food Bank, we are so thankful to be a part of such a vibrant community in Guelph," Pilliar said
"We want to be able to do that for the next 30 years, and help to make the broader community a better place for all."
