U of G students show pride at travelling Jewish festival

Guelph is among 50 North American stops on Let HERE Be Light tour

With a focus on positivity and fostering pride, the Let HERE Be Light tour pulled into the University of Guelph on Thursday afternoon.

Students and others from the community had an opportunity to learn about and celebrate Jewish culture through a series of activities and giveaways in Branion Plaza.

“The last year was a very difficult year for the Jewish students. Many of them felt like they had to go into hiding or weren’t able to be proud of who they are,” said Rabbi Raphi Steiner, director of Chabad of Guelph which hosted the Chabad on Campus tour stop.

“Our hope is to have them come out of themselves, show who they are, be proud of who they are so everyone around them is also proud.”

Steiner was referring to the time since Oct. 7, when the latest conflict between Hamas and Israel began. It’s a time that’s seen growing anti-semitism in Guelph and around the world.

In response, the Let HERE Be Light tour is delivering a “jolt of joy and positivity” by visiting 50 campuses throughout North America, a news release explains.

During the two-hour stop in Guelph, visitors had an opportunity to check out Jewish-themed crafts, sample kosher foods, receive mitzvah gifts and learn about Jewish culture, among other things.

Steiner encourages anyone who wants to know more about the local Jewish community and/or events to visit www.jewishguelph.com.
