On April 3, The Rotary Club of Guelph Trillium presented grants to six local charities, with an emphasis on health-related issues.
Elora House, a residence for women who have been human trafficked, received a grant to help offset the costs of therapy to support the women as they work through the trauma they have experienced. While Diabetes Canada received funds to send a child to a special camp for children with diabetes for two weeks.
For Autism Ontario the funds will be used to help children participate in a special soccer program and with Big Brothers, Big Sisters the grant will be used to fund a special, in-school program, Play-on, aimed at girls in grades 5-6 where they will learn more about healthy eating and positive body image, all aimed to enhance their self-esteem and mental health.
Immigrant Services is receiving funds to support shelter and transportation costs to newcomers to Canada. The number being served is up 74.5 per cent on last year.
Last, but not least, the grant to the Guelph Tool Library will be used to collect, refurbish and redistribute 50 laptops which will then be provided to different social service agencies in Guelph for them to use or pass on to clients.
The Guelph Trillium Club received 33 applications for funding, totalling $73,000. A total of 13 agencies will receive funds from the club and a second presentation of cheques is arranged for early April.
The $24,000 donated to community organizations was raised through the annual Ribfest and Tour de Guelph events. Tour de Guelph, which is hosted in partnership with the Guelph South Rotary Club, will be held on June 23 and the main beneficiary will be the Guelph Hospital Foundation. The 26 th Ribfest will be held at Riverside Park on August 23-25, 2024. Volunteers to help with these events are welcome.
