Highway 7 fire destroys garage, sends homeowner to hospital

The fire is not considered suspicious and caused an estimated $250,000 in damage

GUELPH/ERAMOSA – A homeowner has been taken to hospital following a fire at a home on Highway 7 near Rockwood that destroyed a garage.

Guelph/Eramosa fire chief Jim Petrik said in a phone call a call came in at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday afternoon for a residential fire at a house on Highway 7, just past the rest stop towards Rockwood.

“When we arrived the garage was fully involved and it was starting to migrate into the house,” Petrik said.

“We were able to fight the fire from the outside and inside of the house and we were able to stop the progression of the fire into the house.”

The garage was a total loss and there was a vehicle and riding lawn mower destroyed as a result.

Petrik said the homeowner was transported to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire chief said the cause of the fire has not been determined but is considered non-suspicious with a damage estimate of $250,000.

Petrik noted there was tanker support from Guelph, Fergus and Puslinch fire stations.

“It was a good stop, firefighters did a great job in stopping the progression of the fire,” Petrik said.

Highway 7 was closed for a period of time but has since reopened.
