Guelph’s Lucky Iron Fish will be looking to get lucky in the Dragon’s Den Thursday night.

The social enterprise, which sells an iron-shaped fish that infuses iron into food as it cooks, will be looking for a deal on the hit CBC show Dragon’s Den. The show airs at 8 p.m.

Lucky Iron Fish is seeking $175,000 for a 5 per cent stake in the company.

Dr. Gavin Armstrong, founder and CEO of Lucky Iron Fish, made the pitch to the Dragons.

“This is such a remarkable idea to solve such a big problem,” Dragon Michele Romanow says in a promo ad for Thursday’s episode.

Lucky Iron Fish started as research by a University of Guelph masters student named Christopher Charles and was established as a viable commercial social enterprise by Armstrong in 2012.

The fish is used in cooking pots to help prevent iron deficiency anemia.

It is aimed at people who might be at risk for iron deficiency, such as women with heavy menstrual flow, vegetarians and vegans, pregnant and nursing women and endurance athletes.

Kate Mercer, Lucky Iron Fish's VP of marketing and communications, said the company is currently in the process of trying to raise $1 million dollars through various sources as it looks to expand.

Since it's inception they have sold roughly 170,000 Lucky Iron Fish.

More information on the product can be found at https://luckyironfish.com/.

For each Lucky Iron Fish purchased, the company donates one to a family in need through partner charitable organizations.

“Appearing on the season’s premier is an honour. I am thrilled that a social enterprise will be featured on episode one and I hope this sets the tone for the remainder of the season.”
