The Guelph Humane Society is holding a microchip clinic this weekend so you can keep track of your furry friends.

The clinic will take place for both dogs and cats on Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 190 Hanlon Creek Blvd.

The cost is $40 per pet, with proceeds going back to the GHS to provide care and medical treatment to animals in need.

Microchipping is the most effective way for the GHS to reunite families with lost pets. According to GHS manager of programs and community outreach Katherine Lenoard, evidence shows the chance of a cat or dog being reunited with their owner is 72 per cent more likely if they are microchipped.

The GHS had 180 stray animals enter its care during July and August; only 11 per cent of them were microchipped.

The process is fast and painless, and involves a microchip the size of a grain of rice being permanently implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades. The microchip can then be scanned by shelters and vet clinics, linking the pet to its owner’s contact information.

Appointments for the clinic are required and can be made online here, by emailing [email protected] or calling 519-824-3091.
