GUELPH – Additional funding has been acquired to facilitate needed building reinforcements and equipment upgrades planned for a downtown shelter.

According to an update report to be discussed during county council on Thursday, the County of Wellington has received a conditional letter of commitment for $2,627,696 from an unnamed source to help fund a three-storey, 24 new emergency shelter beds and 12 transitional housing units at Stepping Stone at 23 Gordon St.

This report follows a project update earlier this month that found the project's cost had jumped by $1 million.

The county had received confirmation of $3,941,000 in secured capital funding for the project in January.

Previously anticipated to cost $3.94 million, the project's price tag is now sitting closer to $5 million.

County staff can't announce specific funding sources at this time due to "communication embargos" put in place by funding partners, the report says.

The shelter is expected to open next February.
