The search is on for a suitable spot for a planned community-led tiny homes pilot project aimed at helping unhoused residents.

On Tuesday, Guelph Tiny Homes Coalition officials called for interested landowners to step forward and make their space available for a temporary collection of structured tiny homes. They’re looking for vacant property between 0.8 and two acres in size that’s “ideally” just outside the downtown core.

“Landowners and developers may hold properties but may not be in a position to develop them right away,” said Dennis Devey, Guelph Tiny Homes Coalition board member, in a news release. “In cases like this, it may be in the best interest of the landowner or developer – and the community – to participate in a project like this.

“We encourage anyone with a potential site to give us a call for a

conversation and a walk-through.”

The coalition’s call comes about three weeks after the City of Guelph made a similar plea, seeking land for a temporary sheltered encampment.

Since January, when the coalition formalized, it has been approached by a number of private landowners and has discussed its plan with city, county and school board officials.

“We believe that no one should be living a tent and that a community-led pilot is the fastest, most cost-effective and compassionate way to start solving this problem,” said Liz Hales, coalition spokesperson, in the release.

With an eye on completing the first phase of construction this fall, the coalition’s deadline for interested landowners is April 26. To contact the coalition, call 519-731-8978 or email [email protected].
